CLEAR ANSWERS / PRACTICAL ADVICE

Find the answer you need.

These answers explain how custom business software projects are scoped, built and supported. They describe O’Reilly Technologies’ approach rather than guaranteeing a particular feature or outcome for every project.

What problems are a good fit for custom software?

Recurring paper work, duplicate capture, missing job records, disconnected systems and unreliable reporting are common starting points. The best fit is a workflow with a clear problem that cannot be solved adequately through simpler changes.

Do I need a technical specification before we speak?

No. Bring an explanation of what is failing today, who does the work, how decisions are made and what a useful outcome would look like. Technical requirements are developed from that operating context.

Where is O’Reilly Technologies based, and who can enquire?

The software studio is based in Paarl, South Africa, and works with businesses worldwide, remotely and over video calls. Use the contact page to describe your operation and the project you have in mind.

Do you work with clients outside South Africa?

Yes. We work with businesses worldwide, remotely: discovery calls and demos happen over video, and the software is hosted wherever suits your users and your data-protection obligations. South African time (UTC+2) overlaps the whole European working day and the morning in the Americas.

Will every enquiry turn into a software development project?

Not necessarily. Sometimes a process improvement, an integration or a better use of existing tools is more appropriate than a new application. The initial discussion should establish that before committing to a build.

What kinds of software can O’Reilly Technologies develop?

The studio focuses on operational software: offline-first mobile capture, business dashboards, traceable records, connected stock and jobs, industry workflows and multi-tenant SaaS platforms.

Can an application work with no internet connection?

Yes, where offline-first behaviour is designed into the project. Essential records can be saved on a device and synchronised later, with retry and conflict rules defined for the workflow.

Can new software connect to an existing website or accounting system?

That depends on the existing product’s APIs, exports, permissions and licensing. Integration feasibility and data mapping need to be reviewed before timelines or costs can be confirmed.

Can different teams or branches have separate access?

Role-based permissions, location rules and client separation can be part of the architecture. Those access boundaries are defined against real responsibilities and the organisation’s data requirements.

Can the system make historical records easier to trace?

It can be designed to preserve event timestamps, user attribution and changes to records. The required audit trail depends on how records are used, which events matter and any applicable compliance needs.

What happens after the first conversation?

If the problem is suitable for custom development, the proposed next stage is a paid process audit to map the workflow and exceptions. Requirements and a working foundation demo are then used to reduce risk before a full rollout.

How is the software development price calculated?

Price depends on the scope, complexity, integrations, user roles, data migration, testing and rollout requirements. Defined phases make costs more transparent than a broad quotation based only on an idea.

How long does a custom software project take?

There is no responsible fixed timeline without reviewing the requirements. A focused workflow demonstration can help reveal complexity early; delivery timing is agreed once the phases and acceptance criteria are clear.

Do clients keep the process audit report?

Yes. The described delivery model treats the paid process audit as a client-owned report, even if the client chooses not to proceed with the software build.

Who owns the software and business data?

Business data access, source-code rights, licences, handover and ongoing support should be documented explicitly in the project agreement. The process describes client access to exportable records; it is not a substitute for contractual ownership terms.

Can we begin with a smaller working demonstration?

Yes. The foundation demo is intended to prove one end-to-end workflow using suitable data and architecture before extending to more teams, modules or locations.

Support and security

Is hosting and ongoing support included automatically?

Not automatically. Hosting, hardware and ongoing support are discussed separately from defined development phases, so responsibilities and ongoing costs are clear.

How is access to sensitive operational data managed?

The required permissions, user roles, storage and audit trail are considered during design. Any industry-specific security or legal obligations must be evaluated as part of the actual project.

Does custom software automatically make a business compliant?

No. Software can support accurate records and controlled access, but compliance also requires appropriate policies, processes, governance and testing against the rules that apply to the organisation.

How do I contact O’Reilly Technologies?

Use the project enquiry page, email elmo@oreilly-tech.com or call +27 65 902 9650. Describe the operating problem first; you do not need to prepare a technical presentation.
